About Service-Learning
Ways to make a difference. |
Service-learning is a link between academic coursework and societal issues that encourages reflection on one's role in the community and an understanding of academic course content. As part of Carlow’s core curriculum, all undergraduate students in our day program fulfill a service-learning course to graduate.
For example:
- English writing students partner with a local non-profit organization to complete a strategic plan.
- Social Work students learn core competencies in the profession and acknowledge their civic responsibility by responding to a community partner's need to update a social services and local business resource guide.
- Nursing students develop educational posters on prenatal nutrition to present at local health fairs.
- Students in a Theology class reflect on the mystery of losing oneself in service to another, only to find their most authentic self revealed as service becomes a way of life.
