“Small acts of service and of virtue are daily within our reach”
-- Mother Catherine McAuley, Founder, Sisters of Mercy
Community service day reflects a key component of Carlow’s mission: “to embrace an ethic of service for a just and merciful world.” It is just one of many ways that Carlow’s students engage in their local community and continue the legacy of service of the Mercy founders. Other opportunities are available through service-learning courses and student organizations.
This year marks the 4th annual campus-wide service day at Carlow University. All first year students will serve with local community partners in order to support human and environmental needs within Pittsburgh. All other students, faculty and staff are invited to participate in campus teach-ins regarding issues of social justice and concern. Carlow’s efforts will also contribute to the Pittsburgh 250 celebration where local universities will be providing 250 hours of service in honor of the city of Pittsburgh’s founding.
Thoughts from previous participants:
We’re always happy to have students because it seems they want to be there. When the children arrived for the after school program; they were delighted with the very freshly painted window pictures and enjoyed viewing them.
– Providence Connections
We were glad the day gave the students an opportunity to see a different part of life.
– Just Harvest
The students completed their service assignment with great diligence and efficiency; It was a positive experience because the volunteers were so willing and competent.
– Girls on the Run
